I finally know the difference between pleasing and loving, obeying and respecting. It has taken me so many years to be okay with being different, and with being this alive, this intense.

Eve Ensler, I Am an Emotional Creature: The Secret Life of Girls Around the World (via ellielamothe)

  • When I first tried to read I Am An Emotional Creature I could barely get through it. I guess a part of me cringes away from the thought that my emotions would be a huge identifying factor of who I am. The idea carries a lot of heavy connotations, for example, if I am emotional, I am therefore less logical. You see this kind of thinking a lot from men when women are being considered for leadership positions. It was used against Hillary when she was running for president.

It’s unfair, especially considering that men are great at showcasing illogical decision making in positions of power due only to their sexuality, (ie Bill Clinton, a number of ‘morally conservative’ Republican leaders, etc) but no one counts that against a mans’ ability to be logical when it comes to their position of authority. The ability to compartmentalize personal vulnerabilities is taken for granted when it comes to men, for some reason it’s not seen the same way for women.

I wonder what would cause more scandal, another sex escapade from a male leader, or a few shed tears over the innocent civilian lives lost by our foreign policies from a female leader.

Did someone actually take the time to stick this? Fucking win.

If sex and creativity are often seen by dictators as subversive activities, it’s because they lead to the knowledge that you own your own body (and with it your own voice), and that’s the most revolutionary insight of all.
